World Building: Hospitality

Hospitality is very important to the people of Shynonia. If a person comes to their home after dark or during foul weather, they are expected to welcome that person and provide them with shelter until they can safely leave. Once a visitor enters their home, if the weather turns or it becomes dark, they are expected to invite the person to stay. It is considered rude to refuse an offer of shelter. However, if there is a pressing need for the guest to leave, they can do so by excusing the host of any responsibility in case something should happen as they travel home.

Visitors into their homes are offered, first and foremost, a place to sit down and get comfortable. Only when the visitor is settled are they offered food or drink. As a guest, setting your cup or plate down anywhere except for your lap indicates that you have had enough. After this point any business can be discussed.
