“Are you ready to go, Stephen?” Jakob said, peering around the corner of the shelves. His brows furrowed. Stephen was looking at shelves with a perplexed expression on his face. Jakob didn’t have to ask him why. Instead, he asked, “Where did all the books go?”

“I don’t know,” Stephen said, shaking his head. He looked around and then looked at Jakob. “I’m certain that these shelves were full this morning.” He sighed and tugged at his hair. “The Head Librarian is going to skin me!”

“I sincerely doubt that,” Jakob said. He chuckled then and added, “It’d make a terrible mess and you know how he feels about messes.”

“Not funny, Koby,” Stephen said, pointing at him. “Not funny at all!”

A terrible chomping, crunching sound echoed through the room. Jakob frowned and looked at Stephen. “Sweet Creation, Stephen? What is that?”

Stephen frowned and shook his head. “Whatever it is, it sounds… horrible,” he said. He bit his lip and moved towards the sound. He could feel Jakob behind him, almost touching his shoulders.

He peered around a bookshelf and frowned. The shelves were empty of books. “Something is eating the books,” he said, sounding horrified. “What could possibly eat grimoire?”

“Works! The Head Librarian is going to skin you,” he breathed.

Stephen shook his head. “Heavens,” he breathed, “he will!” He shook his head and sighed. “What could possibly be eating grimoire? I mean, this couldn’t be just normal bookworms.”

Jakob frowned faintly and looked at Stephen. “Maybe we can fix this,” he said, “I know someone.”
