No Regrets

This little scene was inspired by a prompt from Tomi Adeyemi’s site.  This was another fun one…

Jocelyn frowned at Henry and then at the little boy that was almost – but not quite – hiding behind him.  The child might have been frightened, except that he was grinning so impishly that Jocelyn strongly suspected he simply knew she couldn’t reach him there.  Heaving a sigh, she turned to Henry and arched her brows at him.  “Well?” she said, crossing her arms over her chest.

Henry gave her a lopsided grin.  “I accept no responsibility,” he said, “and I would do it all again.”

“You did it, then,” she said.  When Henry nodded, she shook her head.  “Then who is responsible, if it’s not you?”

Shrugging, Henry said, “Varyk was saying that your office could use some redecorating.  We all agreed that it lacked… something.  When your secretary was out, I snuck in and added a few… personalized touches.”

“So… are you blaming Agent Teifen?”

“Perish the thought, Jocelyn,” he said.  He patted her shoulder and smiled.  “I’m blaming your secretary for leaving your door unguarded and… well, you hold a bit of responsibility as well.  After all, you should have locked your office before you left.”

Frowning, she looked down at Johannes.  “What have you got to say for yourself, young man?” she asked.

Still grinning, he said, “It’s a really awesome lair, Lady Director.”  Then, he giggled and scampered down to the area where his father worked.

She shook her head and frowned at Henry.  “I might have some responsibility for my office, but that boy is all your work,” she said.

“For him, I will gladly take all the credit,” Henry said.  He gave her a somewhat mocking bow and then headed off, whistling “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

Shaking her head, Jocelyn headed back into her office and frowned.  She had to admit, if only to herself, that they had done an excellent job of turning her office into a properly draconic cave.  She just wasn’t sure that she’d be able to work in there.  Besides, what would the other directors think?
